Snowblaze's white fur nearly glowed in the gloom of the forest. He moved like a ghost, silent and stealthy. He could scent Rougeheart here, and followed her trail. She wasn't meant to be deputy. She could have simply invented a dream claiming it was her destiny to be deputy. The other cats were fools to believe her and that dumb tale about StarClan. Ha! StarClan, another story to bully cats into believe in some great force that couldn't control but controlled them. He saw nothing wrong with the warrior code really. It could be tweaked, but still, pretty good. Why not claim it as your own idea instead of saying some spirit cats made it up? However, back to the code: rules sometimes had to be broken. It was for the best. Hadn't it been Snowblaze who was the first warrior of IvyClan? That was a sign, if signs meant anything. He would be deputy once he took care of this thorn in his side.
Rougeheart was concentrating on the mouse a tail-length away from her. She never saw or heard him coming. Snowblaze screeched a battle cry, but it wasn't much of a battle. He easily overpowered her, pinned her to the ground, and ripped her throat. Blood splattered his pelt, and he hissed angrily. Now he would have to wash the vile stuff off. But he had to take care of the body. Of course, the stream. He could hear it babbling now. He dumped the body in the water and washed his paws of the sticky redness, the licked his fur the wrongway to dry it. That was easy.
He turned to return to camp, and froze. Echoshatter was right there, sniffing the spot of the murder. Her eyes widened and she looked up, amber gaze locking onto his fierce orange eyes.
"Snowblaze, you didn't!"
"I did, I had to. I am the rightful deputy."
"You had no right! StarClan sent no sign for you, and now Rougeheart is dead!" Echoshatter spat.
"There is no StarClan, you fool."
Echoshatter's eyes widened. "Well of course there is! That's how I got my sign."
"I'm the reason you're medicine cat. I faked it, whispering into that cave. Willowshade heard the echoes and was dumb enough to believe it. I was right there! He caught me on his territory. He was always a little messed up in the head."
"Don't talk about Willowshade like that!" The gray-and-white she-cat took a step back, his words sinking in. "No, you couldn't have... you didn't it. It was a true sign, a real sign from StarClan."
"If there is a StarClan, they don't care about us. If they did, they wouldn't have let Rougeheart be deputy in the forest place. Half the cats in these Clans aren't real warriors. But I am, so I solved these problems by my own paws. I fianlly did something about it, while StarClan does nothing! You're so called dreams are nothing me. And if you have a whisker's worth of sense, you won't tell Shadowstar about Rougeheart. They will find the body along the EarthClan stream and assume a warrior from there killed her. I will be deputy and our problems are solved. We run this Clan. When I'm leader, you and I together, leader and medicine cat will be unstoppable!" he yowled.
Echoshatter opened her mouth to argue and he snarled, "You tell and you go down with me. I will tell the mabout the fake sign, and they will be furious. You were never meant to be medicine cat all along. They will chase us both out. You take one of down, we both go down." And with that he shoved her out of the way and stalked back to camp.
Echoshatter cast a sorrowful glance at Rougeheart. She blamed herself. This was all a mistake, it was all wrong... But what could she do? She loved the Clan too much, and loved being medicine cat. She couldn't lose everything over a dead cat. She was already gone...
