History Before the War:
We are 2700 years into the future (so, about year 4732). However, the technology isn't what you would expect, because of nuclear warfare in the year 2081. It didn't kill everyone, mind you, because after the first major cities were annihilated (Chicago, New York City, Sydney, Moscow, Paris, Beijing, Tokyo, and Los Angeles), the people of the world made a treaty. All electric, nuclear, or gas run technology was destroyed. This also meant that most houses or buildings were torn down as well. It was at this time (okay, 130 years later - 2217) that people realized they weren't alone, even on their own planet. There were two races of intelligent, humanoid life that had resided on Earth before humans could even walk.
The Races:
These two races were different as acorns and clouds - but they had one thing in common: They believed they had rights to the planet. Because of their lives, they had about the same level of technology as people did at this point. They were about at medieval technology level, but they lived like Native Americans did before Europeans settled in the New World. Well, humans did. These races didn't. (This is still fully true)
The first race, the one that humans deal with more, is the elves. The elves, thousands of years ago, had come in from their own planet, in another galaxy. Their planet, Reswrti (reh.. swear.. tea) had been located between two stars (their suns, Uyrickq (ΓΌ-rick-kuh) and Seprticv (sep-ert-ick-vuh) went nova and they were the last surviving elves - just 2400 of them. They landed just after the dinosaurs all died, but they didn't have knowledge of them. They colonized the world, and are the ancestors of humans. They stand tall - males generally stand 6'4" - 7'6", while females stand 6'0" to 7'0", on average. They are generally longer than humans, and always slimmer. Their hair is usually some pale shade of blond, white, very pale brown, or gray. Their eyes are generally dark and long, but pale eyes do crop up in about 20% of the population. Their blood is pink rather than red and dries white. They are far faster and stronger than humans, and often live to 2,000 years. They are born with the ability to wield magic. They lived in beautiful, fanciful crystal and quartz mansions that are just the right amount transparent. They still do. But they went into hiding when the second race began to evolve.
Meet goblins. They are a filthy, disgusting species - ironically, the only species to have actually evolved of Earth. They are shorter than humans - males 4'7" - 5'9", females 5'0" - 5'9". They have insectoid plating - a black-blue color. Their eyes are red, black, gray, or white, but their 'whites' have a dirty dark gold tint. They don't have much hair, but what little the do is always black and greasy. They have no ability to wield magic, and they are afraid of it. They are built for physical war - There are ridges along the top of their heads, and their claws are black and shaped kind of like dog's claws, only rounder. Blades sprout from their heels and elbows. Their teeth are fang-like. They are barbaric and uncivilized, purely carnivorous. They fight with bone clubs and their own bodily weapons. They retreated into underground caves when humans and neanderthals began their battle for superiority.
Oh, yeah, and all humans are born with the ability to wield magic as well. Actually, so are horses. And horses also have this little bonding ability, where they belong with a human or elf. Not all have this ability, but it is automatically passed down to offspring if they have it. When the horse dies, the human feels a part of themselves die, but they can move on. If a horse's human (or elf) dies, they have this awesome yet depressingly sad ritual. It'll be explained later. They can also telepathically speak with any human or elf, but they don't actually understand most human language unless they're bonded to a human. Horses live now as an average to 60 - humans, to 300.
Recent History:
The elves, humans, and goblins lived successfully together for about... 15 years. The first (or at least believed to be) half-elf was born. Humans believed themselves superior to elves, elves thought they were superior to humans, and goblins just wanted Earth to be theirs. But humans are compassionate and understanding and just wanted to keep human mother separate from elf father and have elf child be watched by someone who could deal with it. The elves were better at destroying the idea. They killed the father, tortured the mother to death, and torched the child with the mother watching. Thus, true peace ended. Superiority was screamed and elves began to take human slaves. The goblins began raids.
As you can imagine, humans didn't really appreciate this. They waged full out war at first, but they were fighting two fronts. Of course, so were the others. But their people were also being stolen and forced to work in labor camps of sorts. They were slaves. Some humans started trying to join the elves, who admitted them... then turned them into slaves. It wasn't long before humans were a minor population.
Thus emerged the Resistances. To start, in the year 2223, there were thirty of them. They were all named after animals of various sorts. They were: the Wolven Resistance, the Resistance of Eagles, the Resistance of Tigers, the Resistance of Zebra, of Hawks, of Falcons, of Pandas, of Grizzlies, of Sharks, of Cougars, and so on and so on. But the elves were efficient. Despite the fact that some didn't approve and believed the crazy people that said they were somehow related to humans and could live together and rule together, they were always killed. So magic didn't come up often in Resistance fighting, and they didn't have as much knowledge of somethings as elves did.
By the year 4000, many Resistances had folded, changed their names, or separated. There were only five: the Resistance of Lions, the Resistance of Elk, the Resistance of Stars, the Wolven Resistance, and the Resistance of Grizzlies. Ours is the Resistance of Lions. In the year 4196, a baby was born to the Elven Queen and King: Princess T'laina (Ti - laina (like from Alaina)). The Resistance of Stars was crushed in the year 4321, the Resistance of Grizzlies in 4376. In 4581, the leader of the Resistance of Lions with a large group of warriors attacked a major elf trade city. The found that the Resistance of Elks had fallen. They met T'laina there, who asked to join them. After a moment of uncertainty, they agreed. Just a few weeks later, the leader's wife, T'laina, and a group of two girls and three boys younger than 18 went to talk to the Wolven Resistance. They were still there, but about half their ranks and supplies had been destroyed by elves, and half the remainder had given themselves up. T'laina began to teach the Resistance of Lions how to wield magic. Tiran, the Lions' leader, was killed in a raid when his daughter Marianna was six years old, making her the leader.
But when she was 22, her mother was killed in a battle. She witnessed the ceremony of a bonded horse that died without his partner. Before this raid, all the saddle herd had been stolen by the elves. Any that weren't bonded were kept. Those bonded had their DNA extracted (Okay, so elves do have much more sophisticated technology, but it isn't used for fighting, and they don't have nuclear or gas powered crap. They also don't have electric light, heat, ac, etc.) and then were killed, since they couldn't do crap with them, but having more bonded horses would be great.
A new Resistance cropped up in 4655 or so. Small - not even a hundred - but they were elves and had spies everywhere. They hadn't heard of them for a long time, but when Marianna was 76 the Elven Resistance rescued them from an attack that would have almost certainly wiped them out. It was only luck that they had a spy in this group, who had contacted them through magic. Marianna and her Resistance learned that the Wolven Resistance, the oldest one, had fallen a year and a month ago. This was year 4657 - the Wolves had fallen in year 4566. The Elven Resistance decided to make the camp of the Lions their base - more than anything because their leader, Kaureeno (core-eee-no), had fallen in love with Marianna. They married not two months later. It took nearly thirty years for their daughter, Lozzy, to be born - year 4681. Twenty years later - 4701 - a raiding party discovered the half-elf. T'laina managed to fool the party into believing that she was the mother and a male the leader had killed five years ago was the father. She bargained with him - the child lived. But she was killed. Marianna hadn't wanted it to happen, but she had no choice - she couldn't speak for magic. This basically brings us full circle to year 4732. Marianna is 151 years old. They haven't had horses for 77 years. Her daughter is 51 years old and is a healer, but she'll be leader when Marianna dies. Kaureeno is 306.
